Understanding the FIM Standard for Environmental Mats
The FIM Standard for Environmental Mats
What is the FIM standard?
The FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) has introduced a specific standard for environmental mats used on race circuits. These mats are mandatory in many official competitions because they protect the environment and ensure compliance with safety regulations. When a motorcycle, dirt bike, quad, or kart is parked in a paddock or service area, it may leak fluids such as oil, fuel, or coolant. Without protection, these substances can seep into the ground and cause pollution. To avoid this, the FIM requires absorbent mats that retain these liquids and protect the soil.
Key requirements of the FIM standard
An FIM-approved mat must meet several criteria: it needs an absorbent surface that captures oil and fuel, a waterproof underside to prevent leaks, minimum dimensions of 160 x 100 cm to accommodate a motorcycle, and sufficient durability for paddock or service use. Some products also feature the official “FIM Approved” label to guarantee compliance.
The Standard in the United Kingdom
In the UK, the FIM standard applies to all international competitions held under the federation’s supervision. National bodies such as the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) also require the use of environmental mats at motocross, enduro, and road racing events. While private riders are not legally obliged to use them outside competitions, they are strongly recommended for anyone maintaining their motorcycle responsibly.
The Standard in the United States
In the US, the FIM standard applies to international events, but domestic competitions are regulated by organizations such as the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association). The AMA has adopted similar rules, requiring environmental mats at many motocross and off-road races. Even when not compulsory, riders are encouraged to use mats in workshops, garages, and training areas as part of eco-responsible practice.
Benefits of Environmental Mats
Beyond regulatory compliance, environmental mats offer several advantages. They help protect nature by preventing oil and fuel spills from contaminating the ground, they enhance safety by reducing the risk of slipping in the paddock, and they improve a rider’s professional image with clean and responsible equipment.
